Replacing 80+ year old playground equipment

The St. Mary Catholic School playground in Newton, Kansas, was in need of a makeover. Combining fundraising and donations with a $15,000 grant awarded through KaBoom! and Dr. Pepper Snapple, the school was able to replace the 80+ year old playground equipment and update the overall playground.

Designing the Playground Equipment

KaBoom! likes to have the kids involved in designing the playground, so the school held a “design day” challenging students to design their dream playground. The kids had lots of fun as you can see in the video below. And the design renderings we brought were a good match to what the students wanted!

Burke, a preferred manufacturing partner with KaBoom!, had just the right playground unit with slides and lots of climbing to make it fun and challenging for kids of different ages and abilities.

Built in 14 Hours!

After months of planning, the St. Mary Catholic School community gathered to install the new multilevel play structure from Burke, a canopy for outdoor learning and shade, spread 400 cubic yards of mulch to provide ADA accessible ground surfacing, and painted the existing equipment to match the school’s colors.

A community build project is one way to minimize expenses. Over 85 volunteers came out on a Saturday in November to build the new playground, completing it in 14 hours. Local businesses donated their services, products and employees to ensure a successful project.

This was a big project to complete in just 14 hours; however, our certified playground installer was up for the job, organizing the large group and ensuring proper installation and safety for all.

Being able to work with Julie and ABCreative on our playground design was such a pleasure. As school volunteers, we had never taken on such a large job before, but Julie helped us at every step from the design to the install. She listened to our needs and helped us stretch every donated dollar to give our children a safe and fun playground.
