Patriot Park Youth Baseball, Softball Fields
The City of Kearney, NE, had a field shortage for its’ youth baseball and softball – they had 92 teams playing on seven fields! In 2016, the city started building a new youth softball and baseball complex, adding eight additional fields to handle the overcrowding issues.
During the design phase for the complex, it was determined that having shelters over the seating – giving spectators a place to sit, enjoy the game and be protected from the sun – had to be addressed. In the bid process, the architect specified ICON shelters, which are pre-engineered structures that are fabricated in a controlled environment eliminating onsite fabrication. The ICON structures will serve the needs of the youth sports complex.
ICON Shelters Adds Distinguishing Feature to Sports Complex
ICON custom designed the fit of the shelters to the wraparound bleachers, using a cantilevered shelter and placing the posts behind instead of in front for open site lines and so that people could walk through easily.
I’m impressed by how these shelters look. They fit the architecture of the park very well. They are solid structures, which is good for our Midwestern weather. They are a distinguishing feature in the whole park because of their sheer size and how they were designed.
There were a total of eight fields, three standard-sized baseball fields, three standard-sized softball fields plus two championship fields (one for baseball and one for softball). For the softball fields, the bleachers are behind home plate; for the baseball fields, the bleachers are on the foul line.
York Ball Field Complex
Another city in Nebraska found itself with a similar need. This year, the City of York and York Public Schools started building a youth baseball/softball complex.
The ball field complex of eight fields features ICON Shelters products – two shelters and 16 dugouts.
