KCKS Public Schools Playgrounds: Big Project, Short Timeline

August 01, 2017

Location: Kansas City, Kansas
Products: Burke

The kids at nine of the elementary schools in the Kansas City, Kansas Public School District got new playground equipment this year, all of it possible due to a voter approved zero-tax increase bond referendum.

Time for New Playground Equipment

Playground improvements were specific to the needs of each school. Some of the schools just had asphalt – no playground for the kids to play on at all. Other playgrounds had wooden structures that were old and decrepit.

Julie Scott, the ABcreative consultant in Kansas and Missouri, set the project in motion, by developing a plan and vision that could easily be replicated across the different elementary schools to provide new and safe play areas and equipment.

The plan included play equipment from Burke and engineered wood fiber mulch surfacing. Standardizing the plan across the schools has made for more effective project coordination.

Big Project, Short Timeframe

ABcreative has experience completing projects of all sizes – big and small. All nine schools needed to be complete by end of summer.

Scheduling is key to ensuring that all projects are completed on time, no matter the timeframe. ABcreative worked to put a detailed schedule in place that accounted for possible weather delays. Planning and scheduling kept installers on schedule, even allowing them to finish some of the work ahead of schedule.

Good communication among all parties is another factor that helps when managing a large project and coordinating with several other projects. ABCreative takes pride in planning, scheduling and communicating throughout the project to ensure success.

Using the Greenbush Purchasing contract helped to eliminate the costly and time intensiveness of the bid process. Plus it allows customers to choose exactly what they want rather than having to accept the “low bid.” Using the Greenbush Purchasing Cooperative, available on all ABCreative products, allows schools to save time and money while also supporting Kansas schools.
