Hummel Park Upper Slide Opens

December 06, 2016

Tucked away in Omaha you’ll find Hummel Park, one of the older parks in the city. It is home to a day camp that has been there since 1949, one that continues to grow in population even today, with around 3,000 campers each season.

The current Parks Director, a great advocate for both the park and the day camp, has a goal of bringing something new to it every year, something that will keep the kids chattering about it!

For 2016 and 2017, that turned out to be two unique slides! Take a look at the photos below.

One Slide Becomes Two

There was a slip n’ slide on the hills; it was super muddy and fun, but the Parks department wanted to kick it up a notch. Tom Bentley, the landscape architect from Vireo on the project, was told to “come up with a slide at Hummel, but don’t make it lame.”

The first slide was planned for a location that was getting eroded, but the topography around it leant itself well to a second slide. Berliner, chosen for the quality of its products, custom-designed the slides to fit the space.

Hummel Park slidesKids can start at the upper slide – it’s straight with a hump. Getting on the lower slide takes a little more effort to climb up the cargo net but the slide down is well worth it. A little advice: it takes a sharp left turn so hold your elbows in close!

The first slide, the lower one, was opened and new for 2016 campers.

The upper slide, which is now open, will be the new thing for 2017 campers. It is 49 ft. long with an elevation change of 21 feet of fall. Portals were put in so daylight could seep in. It also provides an unusual acoustic experience – when you’re standing at the top, you can whisper and people at the bottom can hear you!

This is a cool element that we know the kids will love. These are big slides that aren’t replicated in the surrounding area.

The ABCreative Experience

I enjoyed working with Larry on this project. He provided great customer service, we developed a working rapport and he always answered the phone. It’s all about the relationship.
