CDBG Recipient, Harveyville, KS, Celebrates Park Opening

October 04, 2016

Harveyville, KS, celebrated the grand opening of its new playground on Saturday, September 24th.

Located in Wabaunsee County, KS, Harveyville is a small town with a population of just under 300. For small towns like Harveyville, it can be tough to find the funds to update or build a new playground for the community. However, this small town did it!

Just check out all the photos at the bottom of this post!

The Harveyville Story

It started a couple of years ago when a group of mothers in the community finally got tired of taking their children to neighboring communities to play on nice playground equipment. While Harveyville had a playground, it consisted of a single swing set with two swings.

This group of mothers started fundraising efforts. Through bake sales, festivals, individual events and even memorial contributions, they raised approximately $16,000.

Then, someone approached Mayor Dustin Kuntz about applying for funding through the Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) program. After thinking about this group of mothers, he took the idea to the City Council who agreed to apply. He then persuaded the mothers to put the funds they had raised in as part of the matching portion of the grant requirement.

“This project would not have come together without multiple groups of people and individuals being willing to unite for a common goal,” said mayor Dustin Kuntz. “There are a number of different groups and individuals that truly have an investment in the community.”

New Playground Funded by CDBG Program and the Community

The City was awarded $136,394 through the CDBG program.

The base project included a tornado shelter and playground; however, we designed the project with several alternate options. While the funding didn’t cover all the options, the Harveyville Apartment Association stepped in to donate additional monies.

For the City of Harveyville, that meant:

Using an Experienced Playground Provider Makes a Difference!

In order for the group of mothers to put up their funds for the grant, they wanted to be sure they had a voice into what would go into the playground. They had sketched out some ideas; however, they didn’t know how to move to the next step.

Before we even applied for the grant, Karen from ABcreative came out and sat down with these mothers and myself. She answered all of their questions and provided input to help guide the decision and form what we wanted the final playground to look like so that our engineer could put together an accurate estimate. It was a fun dialogue to be involved in. And, the playground today is not what was originally sketched out. It is better, more functional. Karen willingly invested herself into our community to make this a super functional playground.

The greatest value ABCreative offers is their expertise and their willingness to invest their time in the community regardless of the outcome.

In addition, all of the playground equipment installers were extremely professional. They practically lived on the job site in order for us to open the playground on time. This is a partnership ABCreative brought to the project, which reflected very well on them as well.

CDBG Program

If you aren’t familiar with it, the CDBG program allows the Kansas Department of Commerce to distribute federal funds to Kansas cities and counties looking to improve their community. Typically, the projects funded are for low and/or moderate income communities. [The deadline for the 2017 program is November 1, 2016.]

Harveyville, KS is just one of several communities awarded a CDBG grant that ABCreative partnered with during the 2016 program.
