For the second year in a row, Meredith Corp. and Rebuilding Together worked together to make a difference in the Columbus Park area neighborhood, repairing houses, installing playground equipment and sprucing up the Legion Hall. Two hundred employees from Meredith volunteered their time in this huge revitalization project.

One team was assigned to make extensive improvements to Columbus Park, including the installation of playground equipment. Burke and ABCreative had the honor of helping this team achieve its goal.

Bringing the Ship Theme to Life

Since the name of the park is Columbus Park, the team wanted to fix the playground up so that it reflected a water theme. And Burke had a pirate ship that fit this vision to a T.

The first challenge encountered was that the work day had already been scheduled. This meant that the ship needed to be delivered in a very short time; however, Burke made it happen, having the ship built and delivered in less than 4 weeks.

The installation of this ship is typically a 2-day project. Again, our partners came to the rescue. Our installer organized this part of the project. He did some pre-measuring and initial drilling of holes a day ahead of time so that everything was ready to guide the volunteers on the day of install.

Thanks to this prep work and the ease of Burke’s structures to install, the project was completed in one day (despite a slow and very wet start to the morning due to the rain).

“So I heard a rumor that there was a park on the South side that had a pirate ship.  My son loves pirates!  So today I packed up the kiddos in the minivan and set sail over to the other side of town in search of playground treasure. … we finally arrived on the “X” on our Google Map and we found treasure!  Not only did the park boast a pirate ship playground, but also a pirate ship spray area.  My son was in his own private pirate heaven … his favorite part being the water cannon in the spray area.” – Comment found in the Des Moines Parent.

More than 200 Meredith Corp. volunteers and Rebuilding Together Greater Des Moines teamed up in the Columbus Park neighborhood to repair homes, install playground equipment and spruce up the Legion Hall. This was part of Meredith’s 12th Annual Fall Workday
